Mode one is parametric memory. The model absorbed a snapshot of the public web, licensed publisher archives, and other corpora during training. Plenty of sites blanket-blocked every AI user agent in 2023 and unknowingly cut themselves out of the one surface that sends referral traffic.

Why a number-one Bing ranking is still not a golden ticket

Here is the finding that surprises most people who assume "ChatGPT uses Bing, therefore rank number one on Bing." Independent trackers comparing Bing's top results against the citations ChatGPT actually displayed found the overlap startlingly thin: in one 2026 analysis, Bing's top three results matched the assistant's chosen citations less than 8 percent of the time.

The mechanism explains the gap. Retrieval hands the model a set of candidate pages; the model then picks which ones to quote based on how well a specific passage answers the specific question. A page ranked sixth with a crisp, self-contained, two-sentence answer to the exact query beats a page ranked first that buries the answer under nine hundred words of preamble.   • Bing-side indexability. If Bing has not crawled and indexed the page, ChatGPT's search mode cannot surface it, full stop.
  • Extractable answers. First sentence under each heading answers the heading's question. Passage-level selection quotes what is easy to lift.
  • Corroborated entity facts. Your name, city, services, and claims repeated consistently across directories, press, reviews, and industry sites. Models trust facts they can triangulate.
  • Third-party mentions. Recommendation-factor studies through 2026 keep placing off-domain brand discussion near the top of the list, ahead of anything you write about yourself.

Notice what is absent: keyword density, exact-match domains, link-exchange schemes, and every other artifact of 2012-era SEO. None of it touches the retrieval path.

Myths worth retiring in 2026

Because "ChatGPT SEO" is a young topic with real money attached, it has accumulated folklore fast. Three claims come up in nearly every sales pitch we are asked to review:

"Add meta keywords for the AI." The meta keywords tag has been dead weight since roughly 2009. No search engine reads it, no retrieval system reads it, and stuffing it does nothing except date the developer who added it.

"Here are the 12 official ChatGPT ranking factors." OpenAI has published no ranking factors, because there is no ranking. Any list presented as official is reverse-engineered guesswork at best. The defensible version of that list is the five retrievability signals above, each traceable to published research or documented crawler behaviour, not to a leak.

"You need an llms.txt file." A proposed standard, politely ignored in practice. Google has said plainly that it does not use llms.txt, and no major assistant has confirmed consuming it. Robots.txt directives for the documented crawlers are what actually get honoured.

A useful filter for any pitch in this category: if the tactic cannot be tied to a documented crawler, a published study, or a reproducible test, it is decoration.

What schema markup does here, and what it does not

Structured data occupies a strange middle ground. Google states that schema is not required for generative AI features, and no evidence shows ChatGPT parsing JSON-LD at answer time. Yet schema still earns its place, for an unglamorous reason: it removes ambiguity for the crawlers and knowledge systems that feed every retrieval layer. Where this leaves a Canadian small business
